WAZAN UPM ENGAGES WITH THE SAWAH SEMPADAN COMMUNITY THROUGH A CUSTOMER SERVICE COUNTER WITH UCTC

TANJONG KARANG, 2025 – The Waqf, Zakat and Endowment Management Centre (WAZAN), Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), took a proactive step to approach rural communities by opening an official customer service counter in conjunction with the Sawah Sempadan Community Program organized by the University Community Transformation Centre (UCTC) UPM recently.

This highly anticipated community engagement program is a strategic UPM initiative to transfer the university's knowledge and expertise directly to the community, especially paddy farmers. WAZAN's participation is seen as providing significant added value to the program by offering convenience and direct access to Islamic financial services.

Making Zakat and Waqf Services Accessible to the Public WAZAN's presence in Sawah Sempadan focused on efforts to spread awareness and facilitate matters for local residents seeking further information without having to travel far to the WAZAN office at the Serdang campus.

Among the main services that garnered attention at the WAZAN counter throughout the program included:

• Agricultural & Income Zakat Assessment: Assisting paddy farmers in accurately calculating the zakat rate for their agricultural yields (paddy) and income based on the current nisab.

• Acceptance of Waqf Contributions: Providing an opportunity for the local community to contribute to the UPM waqf fund to support educational development and student facilities.

• Selangor Asnaf Assistance Advisory Services: Providing detailed explanations regarding the conditions, eligibility, and zakat assistance application procedures specifically for the children of the community who are currently pursuing their studies at UPM.

A Meaningful Synergy with UCTC UPM This close collaboration between WAZAN and UCTC UPM proves the university's commitment to engaging with all layers of society holistically. While the UCTC team focused on transferring agricultural technology, resource management, and crop innovation to the farmers, WAZAN complemented these efforts by empowering the element of blessed Islamic wealth management.

The majority of local residents expressed their gratitude and welcomed this on-the-ground initiative as it was highly customer-friendly, saved time, and answered their various queries regarding the rulings of agricultural zakat. Realizing this positive impact, WAZAN is committed to continuing its participation in future UCTC community outreach series to further expand the benefits of zakat and waqf.
