SERDANG, May 22 – The Centre for Management of Wakaf, Zakat and Infak (WAZAN), Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), in collaboration with the Selangor Zakat Board (Lembaga Zakat Selangor - LZS) and the Selangor Wakaf Corporation (Perbadanan Wakaf Selangor - PWS), organized the 2026 'Celik Zakat dan Wakaf' (Zakat and Wakaf Literacy) program to provide early exposure to university students on the importance of zakat and wakaf practices.
The program, held in conjunction with the UPM Career & Futurepreneur Fair (CFF) 2026 at the Sultan Abdul Samad Library, UPM, aimed to foster awareness and cultivate a culture of giving among students from a young age.
Director of WAZAN UPM, Haris Dahlan, stated that the program serves as a platform for students to understand and experience firsthand the practice of fulfilling zakat and wakaf obligations.
“This program aims to provide students with exposure to the obligation of zakat and the highly encouraged practice of wakaf in Islam.
“Previously, students were mostly recipients of zakat and wakaf assistance, but through this program, they are given the opportunity to experience for themselves what it feels like to contribute and fulfill these religious obligations,” he said.
Through the program, students were also introduced to the Start With Sepuluh (SWS+) initiative, which encourages zakat payments starting from as low as RM10, alongside exposure regarding the 100 percent tax rebate for individual zakat paid.
Additionally, students were introduced to the concept of Wakaf Ilmu (Knowledge Wakaf) through contributions as low as RM1 to support educational development and foster a culture of giving among the UPM community.
Earlier, a briefing session on zakat and wakaf was delivered by Senior Executive of the Zakat Advisory Department, Collection Division of LZS, Mohamad Shakor Sulaiman, and Corporate Division Manager of PWS, Muhammad Hafiz Bahari.
The briefing enlightened students on the importance of zakat and wakaf, as well as the role of both institutions in helping the community and strengthening the development of the ummah.
According to WAZAN UPM, the 'Celik Zakat dan Wakaf' program will be expanded through a roadshow across the entire campus to provide more exposure and hands-on experience regarding zakat and wakaf to UPM students.
The organizing of the 2026 'Celik Zakat dan Wakaf' Program is hoped to produce a generation of university students who are more caring, responsible, and committed to practicing a culture of giving in their daily lives.
