THERE ARE 3 (THREE) GOLD CATEGORIES

GOLD NOT INTENDED FOR USAGE

1. Non-wearable gold or gold not intended for usage may be in the form of currency, savings, minerals, bullion, gold pieces, home appliances and so on.
2. Women's golden jewellery that is not worn within the haul period (one year) is also included in the category of gold not intended for usage.
3. If it has the same value or exceeds its nisab which is 85 grams, then zakat is obligatory. The calculation is not the same as women’s golden jewellery. The amount of unused gold is 85 grams.

CALCULATION

(Weight of gold x Current price for 1 gm of gold) x 2.5% = Total Zakat)

Example :

100 grams x RM144.38 = RM14,438 = RM x 2.5% = RM360.95

GOLD IN THE FORM OF JEWELLERY FOR WOMEN

1. Gold used as jewellery on women's bodies.
2. The rate of gold uruf (usual use of gold) in the state of Selangor is 800 grams.
3. The zakat calculation of the jewelleries are assessed on “jewellery that exceeds the uruf rate”.
4. If it exceeds the uruf rate, the balance should be combined with other property based on gold nisab.

CALCULATION

(Weight of gold - Uruf (800 grams) x Current Gold Price 1 gm) x 2.5%= Total Zakat

1000 grams - 800 grams x RM144.38 = RM28,876 x 2.5% = RM721.90

PRESERVED GOLD (Ar-Rahnu)

The gold that is pawned must at after deducting the loan value and deposit wages.

CALCULATION

[(Current gold weight x current price) – Loan Value – Savings Wage] x 2.5% = Total Zakat

[(200 grams x RM144.38 = RM28,876) – RM10,000 – RM76] x 2.5% = RM470

Fatwa Under Subsection 50(1), Islamic Religious Administration Enactment (Selangor State) 2003:

Fatwa Kadar 'Uruf Gold Jewelry in the State of Selangor (Amendment) dated 22 May 2018:

1. Fatwa on the rate of 'uruf of gold jewellery in the State of Selangor is at the weight rate of 800 grams. Any weight that exceeds the rate of ‘uruf rate of gold jewellery is obligated to be paid zakat.
2. Fatwa on the Rate 'Uruf Gold Jewellery in the State of Selangor [Sel. P.U. 15] gazetted on June 23, 2005 is cancelled.
