ZAKAT: THE BRIDGE OF SOCIAL JUSTICE BETWEEN THE RICH AND THE POOR

Islam has outlined a perfect economic system, and zakat is its most vital instrument. Zakat is not merely an annual religious ritual; rather, it functions as a socioeconomic mechanism that acts as the "bridge of social justice" connecting the wealthy and the poor. Through the mandate of zakat, Islam ensures that wealth does not solely circulate and become monopolized by the elite.

Balancing the Wealth Gap

The core principle of zakat is the systematic redistribution of wealth. The word of Allah SWT in Surah Al-Hashr (verse 7) clearly asserts that wealth should not only circulate among the rich. When those who meet the necessary criteria (nisab and haul) disburse a small fraction of their wealth, it directly injects funds into the grassroots level. This grants purchasing power to the asnaf, bridges the poverty gap, and balances the economic structure of a society.

Building Community Harmony

From a psychological and societal perspective, zakat demolishes the dividing wall between different social classes. When the poor witness and experience the care of the wealthy through zakat distribution, it extinguishes any feelings of envy, resentment, or hostility. Instead, it cultivates mahabbah (love), respect, and unity. This harmonious environment indirectly helps lower crime rates, which are often driven by the severe pressures of absolute poverty.

Empowering Asnaf Sustainability

At the institutional level, such as the Centre for Management of Waqf, Zakat and Endowment (WAZAN) UPM, zakat funds are utilized productively to transform the lives of the asnaf. Financial assistance, educational sponsorships, and business capital injections empower the poor to become independent. The ultimate goal is to break the cycle of poverty so that the asnaf of today can become the zakat payers of tomorrow.

In conclusion, zakat is the manifestation of Divine justice on earth. It demands a small sacrifice from the affluent to build a society that is harmonious, stable, and prosperous for all.
