When someone forgets to pay zakat al-fitr, what actions need to be taken and how can it be resolved?

In the midst of the festivities of celebrating Hari Raya Aidilfitri in the month of Syawal, the obligatory matter that Muslims need to fulfill is the payment of zakat al-fitr. Specifically, the head of the family is the individual who is responsible for fulfilling zakat al-fitr according to the recommended times, which are the preferred time and the deadline (Waktu Afdhal).

However, if someone overlooks or forgets until the arrival of the prohibited time and misses the preferred time to pay zakat al-fitr, what should be done? So, let's take a look at some information that might be helpful or serve as additional knowledge for you.

One needs to understand that there are 5 times for giving zakat al-fitr, namely:

  • Waktu Harus: Entering the month of Ramadan even though the obligatory time for zakat al-fitr has not arrived yet;

  • Waktu Wajib: When the sun sets at the end of Ramadan, it becomes obligatory for someone to pay zakat al-fitr. However, there are exceptions for individuals who passed away before that time or infants born after that time;

  • Waktu Afdal: It is recommended to pay zakat al-fitr after the dawn on Eid day until the Imam stands to lead the Eid prayer;

  • Waktu Makruh: Delaying the payment of zakat al-fitr until after the Eid prayer is permissible, EXCEPT if it is delayed to wait for the nearby needy or those more deserving to receive it;

  • Waktu Haram: After the sunset on the first day of Shawwal, it is obligatory for someone to pay zakat al-fitr, except in situations where the individual loses or is detained from accessing their wealth until the designated time passes, or if they cannot find a zakat recipient (amil or asnaf) until after the prohibited time begins.

For those who miss the time until it enters the disliked time and the prohibited time for paying zakat al-fitr, it remains obligatory for them to immediately pay it. And for those who miss it until it enters the prohibited time, they should make an intention to make up for the zakat al-fitr that has been missed, accompanied by repentance for delaying its payment. If not, they will continue to be in sin as long as the zakat al-fitr remains unpaid.

Therefore, the payment of zakat al-fitr during the disliked and prohibited times should be referred to the local zakat administrator, including by visiting the Centre of Management for Wakaf, Zakat & Endowment (WAZAN) of Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), which acts as the assistant zakat collector for the Lembaga Zakat Selangor, (Selangor Zakat Board).
