WAQF EVOLVES WITH CURRENT TIMES
The glorious history of Islamic civilization proves that waqf is not a rigid or static concept. This philanthropic institution is highly dynamic and constantly evolves according to the changing times and current socioeconomic needs of the society. While in the past, the practice of waqf was strictly synonymous with the endowment of physical assets such as inherited land, building mosques, or digging wells, today's waqf instruments have evolved to become more modern, inclusive, and global in scale.
The Transformation to Cash and Corporate Waqf
The most significant development in the modern era is the introduction of Cash Waqf and Corporate Waqf. This transformation has essentially "democratized" the act of waqf, allowing every individual, regardless of their financial status, to participate and contribute. You no longer need to be a millionaire to endow; micro-sized cash funds collected from the general public can be consolidated into giant revolving funds. These pooled funds are then utilized by institutions like WAZAN UPM to invest in commercial real estate, sponsor high-impact research, and finance advanced medical equipment.
The Digitalization of Islamic Philanthropy
In line with the Fourth Industrial Revolution (IR4.0), waqf management is now literally at our fingertips. The era of digitalization has significantly streamlined collection and distribution processes through online banking applications, e-wallets, and QR codes. This convenience not only accelerates the donation process but also elevates the level of transparency and integrity in fund management. Donors can now review financial performance reports and witness the direct impact of their contributions in real-time.
In conclusion, although the methods of implementation and waqf instruments continue to shift alongside technological advancements and economic growth, its core objective remains intact. It stands firmly as an instrument of continuous charity (jariyah) that purifies wealth, bridges the economic gap, and drives the sustainable progress of the ummah in this world and the hereafter.
