TEMPORARY ASNAF: WHAT IS THE ROLE OF ZAKAT INSTITUTIONS?

The status of asnaf is not a lifelong label for certain individuals. In the reality of a life full of trials, there is a demographic classified as "Temporary Asnaf" (Asnaf Sementara). These are individuals who were originally financially stable and capable, but suddenly plunged into a financial crisis due to unforeseen tragedies such as natural disasters, accidents, critical health issues, or sudden job loss.

A Lifeline During Emergencies

This is where the role of zakat institutions becomes highly critical as a responsive social safety net. For temporary asnaf, they require swift and precise financial intervention. Zakat institutions act rapidly by dispensing one-off Emergency Assistance to stabilize the victims' situation. This aid allows them to purchase basic necessities, settle emergency medical bills, or repair their shelters without resorting to debt.

Recovery and Independence

The primary objective of zakat institutions in assisting temporary asnaf is to help them get back on their feet, not to create long-term dependency. Once their financial crisis is successfully resolved and they regain a stable source of income, their asnaf status is naturally voided. This process ensures that zakat funds continuously circulate and are channeled to those who genuinely need them at the right time.

Assisting Temporary Asnaf on Campus

In the context of Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), students frequently face temporary asnaf situations. For instance, a student who suddenly loses financial support due to the death of the family's breadwinner, meets with an accident, or suffers critical damage to a laptop needed for assignments. The Centre for Management of Waqf, Zakat and Infaq (WAZAN) UPM immediately channels emergency relief and temporary living support so that the tragedy does not jeopardize the student's educational continuity.

In conclusion, zakat institutions are the dynamic protectors of society. Zakat ensures that no individual is left stranded when abruptly tested by life's unexpected hardships.
