Researcher of Institute Bioscience Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), Prof Dr Suhaila Mohamed met innovation to create AFDHAL cooking oil formulated from natural herbal extracts that can reduce oil absorption in cooking and allow it to be repeatedly used up to 80 times.

Prof Suhaila said Afdhal's oil was scientifically formulated using the main ingredients of palm oil and Rutaceae herbs that could reduce oil absorption in frying foods up to 85% and help reduce the risk of cardiovascular and cancer. She said the main feature of Afdhal cooking oil enabled the product to acquire patents from around the world and has been commercialized.

"The extract from Rutaceae herbs is a natural antioxidant that prevents damage of cooking oil. "In addition, wastage can be avoided by the use of 80 times to fry without affecting health. "Among other advantages of this product is that it is enriched with high antioxidants, antibacterial and antihistamines, improves fats, taste and quality of fried foods, preventing oil damage during frying or during storage and making fried foods less health hazards. "Afdhal oil can be used with any kind of cooking oil with the use of only 15 milliliters (ml) or one tablespoon into 150 ml or half a cup of cooking oil," she said.

AFDHAL oil has been named is based on five main concepts;

-Antioxidant (powerful) natural edible herbs extract,
-Free of trans-fats, synthetics or cholestrol,
-Decrease wastage, spoilage and allergy,
-Have health benefits,
-Anti-oil absorped in food,
-Lengthen oil life and usage.

The research, which began in 2008, is still in the process of upgrading and obtaining grants from the  Ministry of Higher Education and has several patents including the United States, Europe, Australia, Singapore, Malaysia, Vietnam, India, Japan, China and Indonesia.

The product which is a natural ultra-moisturizing cream based on the full spectrum of vitamin E from the steroid-free palm oil extract is known as REMDII Sensitive.

This product is formulated with olein extract from the red palm (RPO), rich in tocopherol, tocotrienol and carotenoids which are the main ingredients of skin care formulations.

A group of researchers from Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) successfully developed a steroid-free product for the treatment of skin or eczema, which can reduce skin irritation and exfoliation and can treat skin condition in just two weeks.

Eczema is a disease that can infect individuals of different ages, especially children due to inflammation, dehydration, skin redness and pus from old wounds. Until now, no effective antidote is successfully produced.

Prof. Dr. Lai Oi Ming from the Faculty of Biotechnology and Biomolecular Sciences who led the research said REMDII Sensitive was developed without the element of durable material and contained anti-inflammatory nanostructures capable of penetrating the dermis of the skin to stimulate recovery.

She said that their research showed that most of the emollients, the ingredients used to prevent or reduce dehydration as a protection for the skin, sold for eczema relief, did not contain active ingredients, but had a lot of synthetic chemicals, preservatives and cheap ingredients base that may cause side effects.

Prof. Dr Lai said there are usually two approaches to treating eczema, the use of steroids to reduce eczema effects, followed by emollient cream or good moisturizer.

"Our solutions and alternatives to topical steroids are REMDII Sensitive, an internal moisturizing cream formulated with a vitamin E spectrum supplemented by other ingredients in a balanced mix to repair problematic skin without the use of steroids.

"Tocopherol and tocotrienol have been clinically proven to reduce the hives and burns quickly and effectively through anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory action," she said.

In addition, she said, allantoin and hyaluronic acid in the formulation were able to provide a major physiological lipid and a strong hydration power to restore the infected skin area to its original state.

"Pre-clinical data show that REMDII's formulations successfully reduce the irritation, peeling and effectively repairing atopic dermatitis conditions in just two weeks," he said, adding that REMDII Sensitive will also meet the needs of halal product in the market.

She said that the research started in January 2014 and ended April 2016, and REMDII Sensitive was patented. However, clinical trials are still ongoing to improve product quality.

The product was commercialized through Lipidware Sdn Bhd company. At the event, the exchange of documents on licensing agreements and exchange of memorandums of Understanding (MoU) between Lipidware and the Human Life Advancement Foundation (HLAF) for marketing the product to West Asia were also held. - TribunPutra UPM

Created from the extract of some herbs, Healen is a product that can quickly heal the wounds based o the research by a lecturer of Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM). It is also good news for diabetic patients who suffer from injuries that are difficult to heal.

The study conducted in Healen's production found that the base material was extracted from a kind of herbal leaf and helped cure chronic wounds. The extract is better known as biophenolic oitment easily found in local herbs around Malaysia.

According to Researchers Institute of Biosciences (IBS), Faculty of Food Science and Technology, UPM, Prof. Dr. Suhaila Mohamed, through a study conducted, Healen was able to act quickly to treat the wound 30 percent faster than the usual method of taking medicines.

"Until today, some diabetic patients who use this product give positive feedback," she said during recent meeting at her office in UPM, Serdang, Selangor. She explained, for non-diabetic patients, the wounds are able to heal normally.

However, for those who suffer from the disease, injuries that are hard to recover may even turn out to be worse, requiring surgery to remove damaged parts due to infection in the wound.

Among other things that can cause wound injuries unable to heal are due to skin problems, less surgical procedures and bacterial infections. In addition, obesity, smoking, nutritional deficiency, age increase, lack of movement, chemotherapy treatment, radiotherapy, excessive use of medicines and more.

The four-year study also found Healen was able to treat the bacteria found in the human body, fungus, alzheimer's, boils, scratches, rashes, burns and ulcers on the outside of the body.

To get the maximum effect, Healen cream should be applied to the wound area two to four times a day until healed. However, the product can only be applied for external use only.

Prof. Dr. Suhaila said, the product will also be promoted as a 'first aid kit' in the form of tubes that are easy to carry anywhere. "Other than receiving a positive feedback, some parties have shown interest to market this product.

"This Healen product will be commercialized in the next two to three weeks and we focus on diabetic consumers and children suffer from asthma and alzheimer's disease," she said.
