HEALTH WAQF: A GUARANTEE OF WELFARE FOR ALL

Health waqf represents one of the manifestations of Islamic concern in ensuring that societal well-being is preserved regardless of background and financial capability. Through the waqf instrument, donated assets—whether in the form of land, buildings, medical equipment, or cash funds—can be sustainably utilized to provide quality healthcare services that are accessible to all segments of society. This concept reflects that waqf is not merely a spiritual practice, but also a resilient and high-impact social system.

In the current context, rising healthcare costs and challenges within the healthcare system demand more sustainable approaches. Health waqf emerges as a complementary mechanism to existing systems by supporting the establishment of hospitals, clinics, dialysis centres, as well as free or subsidised treatment programmes, particularly for the asnaf and low-income groups. This approach not only alleviates the burden on patients but also strengthens the unity of the ummah through shared social responsibility.

Furthermore, health waqf plays a significant role in human capital development. When communities have access to quality healthcare, their quality of life improves, productivity increases, and overall social well-being is enhanced. Initiatives such as waqf for medical equipment, hospital beds, and the construction of specialised treatment centres demonstrate that even small contributions, when managed systematically, can generate long-term benefits.

Therefore, strengthening governance and ensuring transparent and professional waqf management are crucial to guarantee that every contribution reaches those in need. With strategic planning and continuous innovation, health waqf has the potential to serve as a guarantee of welfare for all, while reflecting the beauty of the Islamic economic system founded upon compassion (rahmah), justice, and universal well-being.
