Assalamualaikum and peace be upon you,

Zakat UPM has been appointed by the Selangor Zakat Board as an assistant amil of IPT and enables UPM to collect zakat as done by the Selangor Zakat Board.

The purpose of UPM being an assistant amil for the Selangor Zakat Board is to make it easier for UPM citizens and the community around UPM to fulfil their zakat obligations. We also provide a zakat salary deduction scheme because it makes it easier for UPM staff to perform compulsory zakat continuously and it eases the burden on payers by paying regularly monthly instalment.

For UPM zakat collection, all earnings at UPM will be returned to the Selangor Zakat Board as much as 100% and the Selangor Zakat Board will return as much as 50% to be distributed to UPM residents only. Based on the agreement between UPM and the Selangor Zakat Board, that is, UPM is only allowed to distribute zakat to five (5) out of eight (8) asnafs only:

1)      Fakir

2)      Miskin

3)      Muallaf

4)      Ibnu Sabil

5)      Fisabilillah

With this, zakat payers know where zakat money will be channelled and it also helps students and also UPM employees who need zakat money to continue their survival.

The method through the Salary Deduction Scheme (SPG) has been approved by the Fatwa Council in line with the benefit and welfare of Muslims. Monthly instalment payments have already been practiced by most of the community in Malaysia.

This method is very suitable to be used to pay off Qadha Zakat which is property that has not been zakat such as gold, savings, and business even though it has enough nisab and haul. This method can ease and facilitate a person for various situations from month to month.

 

In conclusion, Islam is a simple religion, not burdensome for its people to carry out God's commands. As His words in Surah Al-Baqarah verse 286 mean "Allah does not charge a soul except [with that within] its capacity".

Therefore, paying zakat in installments through the Salary Deduction Scheme makes it easier and easier for us to carry out God's commands continuously (istiqamah).
