ZAKAT IN TREATMENT OF THE SOUL

Worship has certain benefits and advantages in treating the soul, including zakat. Zakiah Daradjat (1975) mentioned that in the field of psychiatry and psychotherapy, the term "mental" is often used in place of personality which means all the elements of "soul" including thoughts, emotions, attitudes and feelings. All these elements combine to build the human soul. It is this combination that will determine the pattern of behavior, how to deal with a situation whether it is a stressful, frustrating or exhilarating situation and so on. Thus, mental illness is a condition that disturbs a person’s thoughts, emotions, attitudes and feelings. He uses the term "mental illness" to mean "psychosis", while "mental disorder" for "neurosis".

Adnan (2003) explained that mental illness occurs when people deviate or excessive in fulfilling their basic needs and natural instincts namely love of life, love of possession, sexual instincts and loving instincts. If a person loves “his life” too much, it can lead to diseases such as fear of death, wanting to live longer, fear of illness and worrying about the future of the child. In modern psychiatry, the term mental illness is widely used to define an individual with a mental disorder.

In general, mental illness can be categorized into two categories, namely neurosis and psychosis. The Gale Ensyclopedia of Mental Health (2008) defines neurosis as “a lack of ability to adapt in an environment, an inability to change lifestyles and an inability to build one’s personality”. Signs of neurosis may lead to anxiety, sadness, depression, anger, irritability, mental confusion and a lack of sensitivity to self-worth ”(C.G. Boeree, 2002). In psychoanalytic theory, a neurosis patient is said to use the defense mechanism excessively to run away or stay away from the feelings of a situation or event that he wants to avoid (Drossart.F, 2005). For example, showing an unusual fear or anxiety to get out of a situation. Anxiety, stress, fear (phobia) and eating disorders are part of neurosis.

Al-Soni ’(2000) is of the view that through the worship of zakat, it can cleanse the property and purify the soul of the person who does it. This is because in Surah al-Syams (91: 9) and Surah al-A’la (87: 14), Allah SWT has signaled for people to purify their souls. Through zakat worship, the purpose of cleansing the soul and property can be achieved. Al-Qaradhawi (1995) states that zakat is a property worship that has its own importance in the Muslim community. The Quran also uses the words sedekah and infaq which refer to zakat. In the Qur'an, it is stated along with the obligation to pray 10 times to show its importance. As Allah SWT says; Meaning: "And establish prayer and pay zakat, and bow down all of you (in congregation) with those who bow down." (Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:43)

Al-Qaradhawi (1995) has also explained the importance of zakat to the giver and receiver of zakat as well as to the Muslim community which is to cleanse the soul from stinginess, educate the soul to infaq and give, make a person morally with the morals of Allah SWT, teach people to be grateful for the blessings of Allah SWT, heals the heart from the disease of love for the world, elevates the personality of the rich, strengthens the sense of love, purifies wealth, adds wealth, can free the recipient in fulfilling his needs and can cleanse himself from envy and hostility.
